“Zambello’s staging brought out not only the natures of the individual characters—from Madam de Croissy’s dignity and Madame Lidoine’s warmth to Sister Constance’s charm—but also made the nuns into a cohesive group. Whether they were warily taking a vote for martyrdom or resignedly exchanging their habits for civilian clothes, they were wholly believable.”
